Food For Thought: The Best Restaurants in Chester

Food For Thought: The Best Restaurants in Chester

If there’s one thing I know and love, it’s food. I’m 100% a self-proclaimed foodie, if I’m not eating it, I’m thinking about it…I’m that colleague that is constantly asking everyone what they’re having for their tea! You’ll quite often find me having a lunchtime read of a restaurant menu like it’s the morning newspaper. After studying at the University of Chester myself a couple of years ago, I’ve become quite familiar with the food options that the city has to offer. From budget friendly brunches, bargain three course set menu deals, to fancy evening meals, I’ve tried and tested a fair few! I’ve scrolled through my camera roll to pick out some of my all-time faves!

Breakfast/Brunch Spots

Let’s start with breakfast, the most important meal of the day…and my favourite too!

The Flower Cup – 61 Watergate Row South, Watergate Street, Chester

The Flower Cup is best described as a botanical coffee shop specialising in all day brunch and brews. Situated up on The Rows of Watergate Street, this cute little café has a quaint astro-turfed verge perfect for al-fresco dining as well as indoor seating that’s surrounded by an array of plants and flowers. They offer breakfast classics, some without reinventing the wheel and some with a tasty twist! The Flower Cup also have great options to suit all diets, whether you are veggie, vegan or have any allergies/intolerances, you definitely won’t struggle for choice! Their sriracha beans are a firm favourite of mine, pictured here on ‘The Hip Breakfast’.

Lunch Spots – Value for money

Lots of restaurants offer amazing set menus or lunch offers, often featuring 2 courses for less than £20!

Rowton Poplars – Whitchurch Road, Rowton, Chester

If you can venture a little further out of the city centre, Rowton Poplars is a great option for lunch or tea with family and friends! Think cosy country pub vibes with hotel rooms available above the restaurant. They offer alternative outdoor seating, featuring wigwams, bubble bars and an extended beer garden with an outdoor bar. ‘Sunday Carvery at The Pops’ trumps any other carvery I’ve had and is definitely the closest you can get to a homemade roast dinner. They do an amazing carvery offer of 1 course for £13.50, 2 courses for £17.50 or 3 courses for £21.50, as well as takeaway and delivery! I have also been earlier in the day a number of times and their lunch menu has a lot to offer, with Chorizo & Cannellini Bean Cassoulet and "Toni's Greek Kebab" (pictured) being two of my favourites!

Moules a Go-Go - Cuppin Street, Chester

I’m a huge fan of shellfish and seafood, and Moules a Go-go has never failed me yet. They specialise in fresh mussels, directly sourced from the farm on Anglesey – but don’t worry if you’re not a seafood lover, they have plenty of options for everyone! They offer a great value set price lunch menu, with 1 course for £12.95 or 2 courses for £15.95. Their pan-fried prawns with chorizo, garlic, tomato and chilli is my FAVE starter of all time! Moules is also a perfect evening option for an occasion, especially if you are looking for value for money! For my birthday this year, the Bed Team and I made use of their ’Wine on Wednesday’ offer which is 2 courses and a bottle of wine for £21.95…an absolute bargain!

Evening Meal

Artezzan - 33 Pepper Street, Chester

Opening in June 2021, Artezzan is Pepper Street’s latest restaurant addition. Promising to ‘rekindle memories of visits to golden beaches and sun-soaked terraces’, they offer food inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean. The interior is absolutely beautiful, with a royal blue and gold colour scheme throughout, floor to ceiling windows and large chandeliers - the perfect place for an evening meal out. During my visit, I went for the King Prawn Spaghetti but requested rigatoni pasta instead for a mess free experience!

We are so lucky to have such great restaurants with varied cuisine’s right on our doorstep! Make sure you take advantage of the eating experiences that Chester has to offer!
